Sunday Post: Shocking survey exposes ‘devastating’ poverty as young Scottish families forced into destitution

On 27th May 2023, Scotlands staple Sunday paper, the Sunday Post, published a harrowing piece by Marion Scott, describing the struggles families are facing

Marion details the results of research by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, that has found families with babies and young children across Scotland are facing the worst financial problems as a result of the cost-of-living crisis.

The impact on families is worrying; more Scottish families rare relying on food banks, many are behind on their bills, and those with formula fed babies continually struggle to keep uop with steep price hikes on formula milk.

Feed’s Erin Williams is quoted:

Many food banks don’t supply baby formula because they wrongly believe it illegal to do so. That is not the case.

“There is guidance from Unicef stating it doesn’t advise food banks to supply formula milk. However, it is not illegal to supply families who need it.

“None of us wants to see families in Scotland having to rely on food banks but, while the current financial situation remains the way it is, guidance needs to be much clearer so people understand there is no legal reason why they cannot supply baby formula.

Marion’s article was later mentioned in the Scottish Parliament by MSP Monica Lennon, as she led a discussion on supporting struggling Scottish families.
